Interview: Tracy Brenton

Australian author Tracy Brenton loves all things creative and takes way too may pictures of sunsets and beaches. (Editor’s note: Can there be too many?). Tracy is working hard on developing a taste for coffee and writing the next book in the Tempest Beach series. Her favourite books are “kissing books”, and yes, that’s a reference to her romance gateway movie, The Princess Bride.

Your debut book, Spark: Tempest Beach Book One, came out on 14 May 2018 (coincidentally, your own birthday). What was the inspiration for the story?
I had a dream about a Dojo where all these hot black belt martial artists trained. The opening scene explores what would happen if an ordinary girl met one of these hot guys and found herself the target of one of those flying side kicks.

What character out of all your books is the closest to your personality?
Sarah, the heroine of my first ever attempt at writing a book, which is still tucked away on the hard drive.

Who is your perfect hero? And why?
Jake from Spark. He is just perfect. Everyone who has read the book says so! I think it’s mostly because he cooks.

Who would be your literary best friend?
Stephanie Plum from Janet Evanovich’s books. I’d be the best side kick ever! Although I can’t compete with Lula’s mini skirts or cleavage…

What other authors are you friends with, and how do they help you become a better writer?
My online writing group authors who have given hours of valuable feedback, support and inspiration, especially the talented Louise Guy.
My editor, a best selling author in her own right, Annie Seaton. She’s full of practical advice and information, as well as a kick-arse editor!
My fellow RWA members who hold me accountable and provide so much insight and information that I don’t know how I survived before found them.

Blurb for Spark: Tempest Beach Book One
Sparks fly between a sassy business graduate and a black belt mechanic when they join forces to save her brother’s business when his life is threatened.
When Alex Vance flees from a bad situation home to Tempest Beach, she is horrified to learn her brother, Dan, is in an induced coma. So he has a business to come back to when he regains consciousness Alex takes over the management of his motor workshop. The only problem is the head mechanic, Jake Lawson, thinks he knows everything. If only he wasn’t also funny, thoughtful and hot, Alex could ignore the attraction.
Black belt martial artist Jake Lawson has plans that don’t include the sweet, but sassy Alex. She might be a smart woman, but a business degree isn’t going to help her change engine oil or replace a wheel bearing. If only she didn’t taste as sweet as she looked. When the bank threatens to foreclose they have to work together to find a way to save Dan’s business. The stakes are raised when a shady loan shark wants payback and Alex is fighting for Dan’s life as well as his livelihood. And if she can’t find a way to repay the debt, he’s promised that she will be the one who pays the price. Throw in a kick-ass crew of sexy martial artists and you’ve got yourself a delicious mix of adventure, mystery and mayhem, complete with a gorgeous beachside location and a love at first sight affair.
