Interview: C H Clepitt

C H Clepitt writes dialogue driven books that take genres and play with them. Clepitt has a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of the West of England.

Your 21st book (including short stories), Eye of the Beholder: A Reimagining of Beauty and the Beast (Magic Mirror Book 1), comes out on June 14th, What was the inspiration for the story?
Actually I saw someone tweet that they wanted to read more queer fairy tales, and I thought, yeah, that’s a thing I could create.

If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be? And why?
In this one? Maybe Angelique. She gets to have an adventure, fall in love, discover who she really is and finds someone who both accepts and loves that person.

What is your favourite genre to read, and why?
I don’t think I have a favourite genre. As long as something is well written and the characters are believable I’ll give it a go. I’m very eclectic.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Write what you want, not what you think everyone else wants.

If your book was to be made into a movie, who are the celebrities that would star in it?
Hmm. Good question. I think I’d want to cast unknown LGBTQ+ actors and help them get a start.

Blurb for Eye of the Beholder: A Reimagining of Beauty and the Beast (Magic Mirror Book 1)

When pressure from his materialistic children turns Claude into a thief, it is down to his youngest daughter to set things right. Angelique agrees to take her father’s place as prisoner to what she is told is a hideous beast.

Angelique soon discovers that the so-called beast is nothing more than Rosalie, a princess cursed to remain trapped in a castle, unless the curse can be broken, something she assures her is impossible.

Angelique does not believe in the impossible, and sets about trying to find a way to save her new friend, who she is rapidly growing to love.

Eye of the Beholder: A Reimagining of Beauty and the Beast (Magic Mirror Book 1) is the first in a series of queer fairy tale retellings in C H Clepitt’s Magic Mirror Collection.
