Interview: Tamar Sloan

Tamar Sloan is a best-selling and award-winning author of young adult paranormal romance, who is also a registered psychologist. She spends her daylight hours as school psychologist, and her evenings and weekends with fingers fly over my keyboard. Born in Israel, Tamar now resides in Australia, and blames her occasional slip up in English on the simple fact that she spoke Hebrew until she was ten, only learning English once she arrived in Australia. Tamar’s love of paranormal romance is part of a wider love for books, and she’s lucky to have an extensive library at home.

Your 9th book, Child of Crossroads, comes out on July 16th as part of the Souls and Shadows: A Limited Edition Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Collection. What was the inspiration for the story?
Haven’s story came to me as an afterthought following an epic idea for a new series. The Descendants of the Gods came to me one day as I was sitting at my desk, totally overwhelmed by everything I had to get done (work – I’m a psychologist, writing – a pre-order release to meet, family – two amazing sons whose legs are permanently hollow) and I pondered how nice it would be to stop time. Then, I could get everything done!
Then, I thought about it a little more…when would you restart it? What if something bad was on the horizon? Would you be tempted to not restart it?? Anyway, Daughter of Kronos was born with that thought – the first book in the Descendants of the Gods series, all about a girl who can stop time.
Then, the opportunity to be part of Souls and Shadows: A Limited Edition Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Collection, this amazing box set, came along, and I realized this series started even earlier than I thought! Child of Crossroads is the prequel in this fabulous series that’s going to give readers an opportunity to see demigods as they never have before!

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?
Well, Haven is the demigod child of Hectate, goddess of souls and magic. It means she can see souls. She dedicates her time, at the expense of her schooling and personal life, to overseeing their transition at the Crossroads – the place where they move onto the beauty of Elysium, or the punishment of Tartarus. Two things happen that rock her world. She meets Caleb – a sweet, smart, persistent guy who has her seeing the world in a new way. And she discovers Shells – people wandering through life without a soul. The two come together in a very surprising way!

Who is your perfect hero? And why?
Is it too corny to say Captain America? I’m an Aussie, so it’s not the US patriotism that sells me, it’s his character. I love that he sticks by his values no matter what, and always believes right will triumph. This fuels everything he does, no matter how difficult it is. I really respect that.
Oh, and he’s REALLY hot.

What is the nicest thing a reviewer has ever said about one of your books?
Reviewers are the best! Reading that they loved my books makes me happy dance every time. The compliments I really love are when readers say they couldn’t put it down (even if it meant losing sleep), and moved right onto the next book in the series. You know you’ve written something special when that happens.

If you had a pet, which book character would you name it after and why?
Now, that’s an interesting question! I’m a dog person, so I think I’d name a new dog after the current character in my Descendants of the Gods series – Micah. One, because I just love the name. But two, because what I love about Micah is his honesty. Micah has grown up surrounded by love and wisdom, he doesn’t see the need to lie. Dogs are the same; they’re sincere and honest. I’m very lucky to have both in my life (now, to convince my husband we need another dog…)!
