Interview: Nicola Davidson

Nicola Davidson decided writing wicked historical romance was infinitely more fun than her previous jobs in media and government communications. She writes erotic Regency and medieval romances, plus sexy Tudor romances with heart, humour, twists, and a guaranteed happy ending! When not writing, she can be found ambling along one of New Zealand’s beautiful beaches, belting out 80’s power ballads or cheering on the All Blacks rugby team.

Your 19th book, Scandalous Passions, releases on May 11. What was the inspiration for the story?
Not entirely sure! After writing a whole lot of Regencies in a row, I was jaded with that era and needed a total palate cleanser. I’ve written Scottish characters before but not a book set in Scotland, and I had a hankering to go old school with castles and swordfights and a bawdy royal court. As it turns out, the late medieval era under King James IV fitted the bill nicely.

If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be? And why?
If I could be one of my characters it would probably be Janet. As a 30-something widow, and a favourite of the king, she had a great deal of freedom and influence which wouldn’t necessarily be the case for most noblewomen, especially younger ones. Plus she owns her sexuality and desires and makes no apology for that. Powerful!

What is one book you could read over and over again?
Anything by Susan Johnson. She writes really vivid historical romance with lots of geek detail and high heat so basically my catnip.

If you could go back in time for a year, which historical era would you choose to live in?
If I could go back in time…hmmm. Not sure I’d last anywhere for a year without being imprisoned as a witch or harlot (lol) but I’d sure like to duck in and out of several eras for a look. Medieval, Tudor, Regency. All the eras I’ve written about, to triple check my facts. Sample some food, try on some clothes, observe daily life in the country and in town or at court. Learn to dance. Oh, and have an impossibly handsome and stern duke fall head over heels for me, obviously.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
This is a marathon, not a sprint and it will be a rollercoaster too. Always make decisions with physical and mental health in mind. You’ll never regret building relationships with other authors, for they actually understand the highs and lows like no one else will. Oh yeah, and write the sex scenes super hot. You know you want to, don’t be afraid or ashamed.

Scotland, 1504.

Lady Janet Fraser didn’t earn her reputation as Scotland’s most notorious sinner by following the rules. A former mistress of King James IV, she’s content to live her life from pleasure to pleasure. Even if those pleasures—and people—are forbidden.

People like Sir Lachlan Ross, given the moniker The Highland Beast, a man as intimidating in battle as he is in size. A beast she discovers secretly wishes to be tamed and submit to her dominance.

Or like her new ward, Lady Marjorie Hepburn, a convent-raised virgin with a desire to be taught all the sensual secrets of the marriage bed. Things that Janet is fully willing to teach her, again and again. There’s much for her to learn.

And forbidden pleasures like the three of them together in one bed.

But Lachlan and Marjorie both have ties to the king. As wicked lusts are indulged and affection unexpectedly grows into love, breaking the rules this time could mean all of their undoing…
