Interview: Adrian J Smith

Adrian J Smith has been writing her whole life, with her first book published in 2013. She loves to leap around genres from action-packed police procedurals to the seedier life of vampires and witches to sweet romances with a May-December twist, with an emphasis on women loving women.

Your 12th book, Stone’s Mistake (Agent Morgan Stone Book 1), comes out on June 1st, What was the inspiration for the story?
This book started as a short story that I wrote for an anthology back in 2015. It was supposed to be about age-gap romances, kind of. I love dark and scary things, and I don’t shy away from the mental games some people play, so my short story was quite twisted in a lot of ways. The running gag is that I can’t write anything without killing off a character, even in romances (it’s not usually the main character in a romance! I promise!). So this short story fulfilled that promise. For years I wanted to expand on this story and continue with Lollie and what happens as soon as she leaves Andrea’s house. I finally had the time, the gumption, and the courage to write it this past year.

If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be? And why?
Oh gosh, this is a hard question, all of them? I love them all for different reasons. In Stone’s Mistake, I would definitely want to be Morgan. I would love to have a slew of siblings, even if I got saddled with most of the running of interference between them even as an adult. I’m an only child, and so having siblings and a lot (Morgan is the oldest of seven) is fascinating to me.
She’s also quirky, like me, but about different things. She’s super confident in just about everything she does, but most importantly, she’s very confident in who she is and what she wants from life. I would love to have that certainty as I go about living life.

What is one book you could read over and over again?
I have read The Giver (1) (Giver Quartet) several times. I’ve read the whole series (though, I was disappointed in the last book), and I could read the first three over again, but definitely the first one. I love that book.
I also love reading Nora Roberts’ Jewels of the Sun: The Gallaghers of Ardmore Trilogy (Irish Trilogy, Book 1) and that whole series. I can’t count how many times I’ve read those.

What is your favourite genre to read, and why?
I love reading romance, honestly. I don’t write it as much as other things, but I do love reading a good romance.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
I would tell my younger writing self to keep plugging away at it. Don’t stop. Don’t get discouraged. Don’t be afraid to take chances and risks and be confident in your abilities.
